Massachusetts-Based. Trusted Worldwide.

At Atlantic Sintered, we specialize in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of high density gears and sprockets for high-performance applications across the globe. Proudly based in Massachusetts, we’ve built a reputation for delivering precision powdered metal solutions that combine strength, durability, and cost-efficiency for clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond.

With over four decades of expertise, our team works with OEMs, system integrators, and product designers around the world to deliver custom-engineered gears built to withstand the most demanding mechanical environments. Whether your operation is in Boston or Berlin, Atlantic Sintered is your global partner for high-performance gear manufacturing.

What Are High Density Gears and Sprockets?

High density gears and Sprockets are produced using advanced powder metallurgy (PM) techniques, enabling the creation of components with exceptional structural integrity, wear resistance, and surface hardness. These gears and Sprockets are ideal for applications where high torque, continuous operation, and long service life are required.

At Atlantic Sintered, we manufacture gears with:

  • Core densities up to 7.1–7.4 g/cm³ for bending fatigue resistance
  • Tooth Flank (surface) densities up to 7.8 g/cm³ for enhanced contact fatigue resistance

This level of density rivals traditional forged and machined gears—while maintaining the cost-effectiveness, design flexibility, and repeatability that powder metallurgy offers.

Why High Density Powdered Metal Gears and Sprockets?

Powder metallurgy allows us to produce gears that are both high-strength and high-value. Combining this process with our proprietary surface densification methods means that our gears perform like forged components—at a fraction of the cost.

Performance Advantages of High Density Gears and Sprockets:

  •  Superior fatigue resistance (bending and rolling contact)
  •  Excellent dimensional stability under high loads
  • Outstanding NVH performance with reduced noise and vibration
  •  Enhanced wear resistance for long component life
  •  Lightweight strength without sacrificing durability

From electric motors and hydraulic systems to off-highway equipment and industrial robotics, Atlantic Sintered’s high density gears perform in even the harshest global conditions.

Advanced Gear Engineering and Densification

Our Massachusetts-based facility is equipped with industry-leading compaction, sintering, and surface densification technologies. This allows us to precisely engineer both the internal structure and tooth surfaces of our gears to meet exacting specifications.

Core Density: 7.1–7.4 g/cm³

Our compaction and sintering process maximizes internal density, enhancing bending fatigue resistance and improving load distribution. This is critical for gears used in high-torque, high-cycle applications.

Flank Density: Up to 7.8 g/cm³

Through selective surface densification, we densify the gear tooth flanks—those areas subject to the highest contact stresses. This results in improved resistance to pitting, scuffing, and surface fatigue, while also contributing to lower noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

These engineered density profiles allow us to achieve performance levels comparable to wrought and forged gears, while also reducing material waste and simplifying production.

Global Applications of High Density Gears and Sprockets

Our gears are used by companies around the world in systems where strength, accuracy, and durability are mission-critical.

Common Global Applications Include:

  1. Power Take-Off (PTO) Systems
Heavy equipment in construction and agriculture demands gears that can withstand extreme torque and high duty cycles. Our gears meet these requirements with consistent reliability.
  2. Hydraulic Gear Pumps and Drives
Our high density gears ensure leak-tight performance, wear resistance, and precise fluid displacement—essential for power and control in hydraulic systems.
  3. Electric Motor Gearboxes
Across automotive, automation, and mobility applications, our gears offer quiet operation, reduced backlash, and long service life.
  4. Small Engine and Tool Gearing
Our powder metal gears provide the strength and dimensional consistency needed for reliable operation in compact, high-speed mechanical systems.
  5. Robotics and Industrial Automation
High precision, repeatability, and wear resistance make our gears ideal for motion control in global robotics and automation platforms.
